Iowa man accused of using golf club to kill ex-girlfriend’s mother

An Iowa man is accused of first-degree murder after police said he killed his ex-girlfriend’s mother with a golf club, according to court documents.

Mark D. Russell, 28, of Fort Dodge, was arrested Monday in connection with the death of Angela McLeod, 45, KCCI reported.

Police said McLeod is the mother of Russell’s former girlfriend, Melissa McKinley, the television station reported. McKinley called 911 at 9:14 a.m. from a Fort Dodge residence where McLeod was found.

According to a criminal complaint, Russell told Fort Dodge police detective he was thinking, "I'm going to kill this (expletive)," while he allegedly struck McLeod several times with a golf club during an argument, the Des Moines Register reported.

According to court documents, McKinley told detectives Russell had broken her mother's cellphone. While McKinley called 911 from outside the home. she said she heard screaming inside, KCCI reported. McKinley added when the screaming stopped, she asked Russell if her mother was all right but the man "just grinned," according to court records.

Police were called to the residence and found McLeod unresponsive, WHO-TV reported. According to the criminal complain, the woman was found lying facedown on the floor of a bedroom, with blood on the carpet and a golf club missing its head, the Register reported.

According to the complaint, Russell said he struck McLeod at least three times with a golf club, the newspaper reported.

"He had no remorse," Fort Dodge Police Department Capt. Ryan Gruenberg told the Register. "He was pretty clear in the interview what happened."
