When they arrived they found Odysseus, abandoned, chained to a fence, and horrifically thin.

The boxer mix, who's believed to be about two, weighed just 28 pounds.

Those volunteers, from LifeLine Animal Projects, rushed Odysseus to a veterinary hospital in Sandy Springs.  That's where he was given IV's and food.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Angels Among Us Pet Rescue says Odysseus is improving, but the next few days will be critical for him.

The shelter says the first update on the dog's condition was "surprisingly good."  He was heartworm negative, only mildly anemic and his blood work looked good. In addition, Odysseus' liver and kidneys are in good shape, as well.

Angels Among Us is asking the public for donations to help offset the dog's medical bills.

Anyone wishing to give can mail a donation to Angels Among Us Pet Rescue PO Box 821, Alpharetta, GA 30009. Make sure to write "Odysseus" on the subject line.

Just why Odysseus was chained and abandoned is not known.
