Investigators said a car followed an Uber driver’s vehicle until it stopped. At that point, the gunman fired several shots into the back seat of the vehicle.
The Uber driver pulled off to get away from the gunfire and immediately called 911.
A passenger in the Uber -- 19-year-old Jacquez Moore -- was pronounced dead at the scene, WSOC reported. The other passenger, a woman, was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said the two passengers requested the Uber shortly before the shooting.
The ride-share driver was not hurt in the shooting, police said.
Detectives told WSOC they believe the two victims in the Uber were targeted.
“It does not appear to be random but at this time I can’t confirm that,” police spokesman Maj. David Robinson told the television station.
Police said no arrests have been made.
The road was shut down for hours while authorities investigated the scene.
"It hurts and it always will and until we figure out a way to keep people from doing bad things to each other we're going to still be out here talking about it," Robinson told WSOC.
