Police always say to keep your garage door closed to help deter thieves. But it can also help keep unwanted creatures from making their way into your home.

Earlier this week, a homeowner discovered a 7-foot alligator in the garage, apparently waiting to carpool, according to North Port police in Sarasota County, Florida.

Alligators are found from southeast Oklahoma and east Texas on the western side of their range to North Carolina and Florida in the east, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

They prefer freshwater lakes and slow-moving rivers and their associated wetlands, but they also can be found in brackish water habitats.
