Final ‘Plunge 4 Pete’ scheduled to remember Ice Bucket Challenge founder Pete Frates

Frates died Dec. 9. Saturday would have been his 35th birthday.

Frates' wife, Julie Frates, is plunging for the first and final time in honor of her husband. In past years, she would usually ride in the car with her husband and walk beside his chair as they traveled over the bridge at Good Harbor Beach, she wrote on a Facebook post. She has raised nearly $300,000 since announcing two weeks ago on Facebook that she'd take the plunge.

Julie Frates wrote that she’ll be wearing Pete’s favorite red, white, and blue bikini, the one she wore when they met July 4, 2011.

The annual plunge started in 2012 to raise money for Pete’s medical bills, and Saturday nearly 300 people are expected to take the cold jump in Good Harbor Beach. That’ll beat the 2014 record when 250 people participated -- the year the ice bucket challenge went viral.

Pete Frates was a former Boston College baseball player and coach. He was diagnosed with ALS when he was 27 years old and since then had inspired the comeback of the ice bucket challenge. It raised more than $220 million for ALS research, WFXT reported.

Frates’ family said this will be the final year of the ‘Plunge 4 Pete.’ Registration begins at 11 a.m. at the Bass Rocks Golf Club and the plunge starts a 1 p.m. at the beach.
