Former teammate Jason Varitek caught the legend's first pitch before Ortiz gave a speech regarding his return to Fenway Park for the first time since the scary incident. He was received by thunderous applause.

Ortiz was hospitalized for nearly two months after being shot June 9. After being released from the hospital at the end of July, Ortiz has largely remained out of the public eye.

The Red Sox and Yankees battled in the fourth game of their four-game series Monday night. New York bested Boston 10-5 in Sunday night's contest, while the Red Sox fired President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski shortly after the loss.
