A circus employee was seriously injured when a camel attacked him Friday at fairgrounds in Maryland.

The handler, identified as a 57-year-old man, works for Lewis and Clark Circus, The Washington Post reported.

As the man was unloading the camel from a trailer, the camel attacked the man, biting and trampling him, The Post reported. The man was airlifted to a shock trauma center for treatment of serious head and leg injuries, WUSA reported.

Lewis and Clark Circus told WUSA that all performances at the Charles County fairgrounds have been canceled due to permitting issues.
