Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill said Joseph Chilton was delivering bread to the Hardee's around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, when he saw employees running out the back door of the restaurant and a woman was screaming for help.

It was an armed robbery in progress, Hill said. Hill said Parrish Damario Kentrell had jumped across the counter and pointed a weapon at an employee, demanding cash.

Chilton ran back to his truck to get a gun and ran back in to help the woman, Hill said. He said Chilton shot Kentrell twice, but Kentrell was able to run away.

Deputies and Clayton County police tracked Kentrell down to a house on Conley on Jewel Terrance Road, where Hill says children were also inside.

SWAT was called to the scene, but the children were out safely before they arrived.

Shortly after that, Kentrell came out and surrendered. Hill says he is being treated for his gunshot wounds before he faces jail time.

Hill said he was "so impressed with Chilton" for "defending those who could not defend themselves" that he made him an honorary deputy and inducted him into "The Sheriff's Posse Hall of Fame."
