An Arizona man is accused of aggravated assault against a military veteran who had just returned from deployment in Afghanistan.

Glendale police arrested Ricky Soqui, 32, on Wednesday in connection with the Aug. 17 attack at a Denny's restaurant, KTVK reported.

Soqui was charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of disorderly conduct, the television station reported.

Authorities said Adam McClure, 27, was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries after the 2:30 a.m. attack that occurred after a fight at the restaurant, according to KNXV.

"As parents, we were always concerned about Adam's safety during his two tours in Afghanistan, but it's inconceivable for us to imagine that he would be a victim of such a heinous, unprovoked crime here at home," Lisa McClure, the victim's mother, told the television station.

Police said witnesses performed CPR on McClure until emergency responders arrived, KTVK reported.

Adam McClure, who returned to the United States during Memorial Day weekend, underwent brain surgery, his mother told KNXV.

"I feel like I've been robbed of my son, and I just pray that he can recover 100 percent," Lisa McClure told the television station.
