Airbus patent could bench overweight passengers

Aircraft maker Airbus has filed a patent to develop a seating system that could better accommodate larger passengers - a bench.

The patent for a reconfigurable passenger bench seat with an adjustable, detachable seat belt system that adults or children could use was published Feb. 11.

It’s not the first time the company has tried to accommodate the growing girth of passengers.

Airbus started offering “extra wide seats” for the A320 jets in 2012, according to the company. It made the window and middle seats an inch smaller in order to squeeze in a 20-inch-wide aisle seat.

“This innovative layout responds to the needs of travelers that are larger physically, and provides added convenience for other passengers,” according to Airbus.
