Women’s Club takes on restoration project ahead of 125th anniversary

The Springfield City Federation of Women’s Clubs members have cooked up a way to fund one of its pet projects.

The group has released “Our Favorite Recipes!,” a cookbook containing numerous contributions from Federated Clubwomen from all over Ohio and it is for sale.

The Springfield Club will use the proceeds to complete its Buchwalter Rooms Project, a restoration of two rooms in the former home of Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs Founder Clementine Berry Buchwalter, located at 805 E. High St.

The sight is the current home of the Women’s Town Club.

In 2019, the organization will mark the 125th anniversary of its founding and the group would like to have the project completed by then.

“We needed a fundraiser and it’s difficult to find things and we came up with a cookbook to honor Clementine. It’s quite a nice recipe book. We’re proud of it,” said Marianne Nave, who helped design the book, wrote the introduction and contributed information about Buckwalter and the organization.

The Springfield club sent out invitations to club members from throughout the state and came up with roughly 180 recipes.

The final printed version wasn’t due to be received until mid November, but arrived in in late October. The response has been enthusiastic as about 100 of the 300 available copies have sold, Nave said.

Nave added that several other recipes were received after the deadline and if a second printing occurs these could be included.

The restoration project is about three quarters of the way finished according to Nave. Two rooms are being renovated to include furnishings from the period Buckwalter lived in the home and as a mini museum of Women’s Clubs historical memorabilia and Buckwalter.

The goal is to have the renovations finished in time for the celebration of 125th anniversary in October 2019.

Cookbooks are available for a $10 donation from committee members or by check and sent to City Federation Cookbook Orders c/o Sandy Justice, 3002 East High Street, Springfield, OH 45505 along with $3 for envelopes and shipping.
