Troy student trip to D.C. back on after new tour company found

TROY - Sixth-grade students from Troy will be going to Washington, D.C., after all.

The district announced Wednesday morning that WorldStrides, a tour company in business 51 years, will sponsor the trip that will move forward May 20, as planned.

EARLIER: Hope fades for Troy students Washington trip

“The hope of WorldStrides is that monies collected through donations and refunds could be collected and forwarded to WorldStrides to offset their financial exposure. Troy Board of Education will receive all funds and then transfer to WorldStrides,” Superintendent Eric Herman said. “When speaking with Steve Borenstein (of World Strides), he asked for us to give it our best. I assured him we would give them our best effort and do the best we could in raising monies.”

The 192 sixth-graders and 58 chaperones planning to make the annual trip were told Friday it would likely be canceled because Discovery Tour had not paid reservations and was out of business. The schools canceled the trip but had been working on options.

TRENDING: What you need to know from Tuesday’s election

Donations for the trip from foundations, individuals or companies can be sent to or dropped off at:

Troy Board of Education, 500 N. Market St., Troy, Ohio, 45373. Checks should be made out to Troy City Schools. Write D.C. Trip 2018 in the memo.

The trip will be four days.

“Administration has been working non-stop … to find answers … The trip will be shortened by a day, which at this point is way more than we were expecting,” Herman said.

The trip came about through a contact of Van Cleve School Principal Matt Siefring, Herman said.
