Tips to keep your home cozy and heating costs down in the cold

Keeping your house warm and cozy this winter month has been very difficult in the bone-chilling cold.

That's why weather stripping and window insulation kits have been flying off the shelves.

“Even the thermostat can’t keep up,” Kathy Judy of Kettering said.

She was inside Greive Hardware in Kettering to pick up weather stripping for around her doors.

“My house is very cold with the cold temperatures and I know it’s because I can feel the air coming in the door jamb.”

These kits are hot sellers in the cold months.

Dayton Power and Light and Duke Energy has some tips on ways to make your home more energy-efficient.

Homes lose heat through windows, especially if there’s a leak. One test is to light a candle to see if air is getting through. If the smoke runs horizontal, you have a leak.

Also, make sure your vents are clean.

It's simple, but setting the thermostat down seven to eight degrees while you're at work can save hundreds in the long run.

These suggestions are just things you can do right now, including moving furniture away from vents to make sure you have full circulation throughout your home.
