Springfield graduates to receive Alumni of Distinction Award

Springfield City Schools alumni will be honored for their professional accomplishments and community service at an award program in April.

Alumni to be honored at the 14th annual Springfield City School District “Alumni of Distinction” Award program include Edgar Bircher, Michael Carter, Robert Chilton, Randall Comer, Krista Dellapina, Randy Ferryman, Ashley Griffin, and Richard Nedelman.

The program is designed to “make our students, as well as the citizens of our community, aware of the graduates from the Springfield City School District who have gone on to distinguish themselves through outstanding performance and/or achievement in their chosen field of endeavor or have made significant contributions to society,” a release said.

The Alumni of Distinction Award program is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 12 at the Courtyard by Marriott, 100 S. Fountain Ave. For reservation information, call Sherry Casto at 937-505-2806.

Here is information about the honorees:

Edgar Bircher

Bircher is a Springfield High School graduate of the Class of 1952 as well as former president of Student Council, member of National Honor Society, and Jim Thorpe Trophy winner for sports and academic achievements. Bircher is a successful lawyer and active volunteer in Texas. Bircher has also served as president, chairman, and board member of various community organizations served in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve.

Michael Carter

Carter graduated from Springfield South High School in 1978. He is currently an advisor to the president and chief diversity officer for Sinclair Community College, where he formerly served as senior vice president for student services and marketing at Sinclair Community College. Carter has received multiple honors and awards for his work.

Robert Chilton

Chilton is a 1989 graduate of Springfield North High School. He is the CEO of IMPACT Community Action, one of the agencies leading the fight against poverty in Franklin County. Chilton has also served as a middle school and high school teacher in Springfield, held positions at Otterbein College and Ohio State University; served as Legislative Analyst for Columbus City Council; director of African American male initiatives at Columbus Urban League and a US Army Reserves Veteran.

Randall Comer

Comer graduated from Springfield North High School in 1988, Comer is currently a partner in the Martin, Browne, Hull & Harper law firm; a volunteer for Clark County Junior Achievement, the Springfield Foundation, and the Clark County Mental Foundation; and a member of the Selective Service Board and the Community Health Foundation. He formerly served as president of the Ohio State Bar Association for 2017-2018.

Krista Dellapina

Dellapina is a graduate of the Springfield South High School Class of 1987. She is a captain in the United States Navy, Judge Advocate General’s Corps and senior policy advisor to the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Dellapina has served in multiple positions throughout her military career.

Randy Ferryman

Ferryman graduated from Springfield South High School in 1971.A former government employee, he is a consultant for intelligence organizations including Leidos, SAIC and Analytic Advantage, Inc. Ferryman previously served in the U.S. Air Force, where he was assigned to the Air Force 544 Strategic Intelligence Wing and received an honorable discharge in 1981. Ferryman also served with the CIA, working with the National Photographic Interpretation Center and Office of Imagery Analysis.

Ashley Griffin

Griffin is a Springfield North High School graduate of the Class of 1997. She is a reviewer for The Journal of Negro Education and a member of the American Educational Research Association, Association of Black Psychologists, and Psychological Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She has presented papers nationally and internationally on African American student issues. Articles she wrote have been published by various news publications.

Richard Nedelman

Nedelman is a 1978 graduate of Springfield North High School, where he earned varsity letters in baseball, track, and football. Nedelman is a surgeon in Springfield. He has helped bring new techniques in surgical care to the area.
