Springfield Arts Council Art Education Director Krissy Brown will lead an online actor’s workshop for children ages 6 to 10 years old on Friday.

The Springfield Arts Council has partnered with the National Trail Parks and Recreation District to offer a virtual actor’s workshop for kids ages 6 to 10 years old.

“The focus of this workshop is choreography. It will teach basic choreography and how to develop a character within a dance,” Springfield Arts Council Arts Education Director Krissy Brown said. “It will also work on basic theater skills like focus, body language awareness, timing, stillness, expression of mood and spatial awareness.”

The class will be held 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

The Springfield Arts Council usually partners with the National Trail Parks and Recreation District to expand their Arts in Education Program, Brown explained.

“With the COVID-19 outbreak we had to cancel our Act On It classes for preschoolers and our upcoming Rising Stars (6 to 10 years olds) Academy,” Brown said.

Their Arts in Education program for middle and high school students has already been converted to a online program.

Brown said that her and Brad Boyer, the deputy director at the National Trail Parks and Recreation District, wanted to continue to offer the program to the younger students.

“We did research on how to best adapt this programming for younger students who may be unable to navigate technology on their own and may struggle more to stay focused on a virtual platform,” Brown explained.

The actor’s workshop will be held through Zoom, a video communication program.

To sign up for the class, email NationalTrail@SpringfieldOhio.gov with the participant’s name and email address.

On Friday, a Zoom link will be sent to each registered participant.

“I typically spend a lot of time doing workshops with all ages and I have hated not being able to be around my kids,” Brown said. “I’m excited to see them in the same “place” and working together to create something. The final “product” of the dance is going to be so satisfying to watch.”
