Second Harvest to distribute food to Clark County families today

The Second Harvest mobile food pantry will distribute food at New Carlisle Elementary School today from 4 to 5 p.m. for Clark County residents experiencing food insecurities.

A line will begin forming at 3:30 p.m., to allow the school to complete dismissal prior to the event, according to a statement posted on Tecumseh Local School’s Facebook page.

“Those interested will need to bring proof of residency in Clark County and a large clothes basket or container to carry the food, as they typically distribute quite a bit of food,” the post said.

In 2019, Second Harvest Food Bank served over 37,000 individuals in Clark, Champaign, and Logan counties.

“Over 60% of the people who come through our doors have jobs. They are trying to figure out how to make ends meet,” Tyra Jackson, executive director for Second Harvest said. “It allows them to keep their lights on. They don’t have to make the choice between food or other essentials.”

The mobile food pantry provides local residents with 15-30 meals per household including perishable and non-perishable food.

The next scheduled mobile food pantry distribution is from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Borromeo, 31 N. Chillicothe St., in South Charleston.

Second Harvest currently has a budget of approximately $1.5 million and relies heavily on a mixture of funding opportunities including governmental, corporate sponsors, private donations and the local United Way to serve thousands of people in the region who do not have access to affordable, healthy foods, Jackson said.
