Prosecutors reviewing pain meds theft case against Kettering Med Center nurse

Officials with the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office said that office is considering charges against a nurse, Samantha Moyer, after a patient's husband accused Moyer of stealing medication from his wife.

NewsCenter 7's Mike Campbell, who broke the story, has spoken with that Clark County resident about his wife's treatment and what the nurse is accused of doing.

Campbell reported a few days ago that the state board of pharmacy turned over the results of its 10-month investigation into Moyer to the prosecutor's office for review of potential criminal charges.

Alan King, whose wife had surgery at Kettering Medical Center for a life-threatening illness, an illness that would take her life about 10 days ago, said she was in unnecessary agony in the days after that procedure because Moyer was stealing her pain medication.

"For the first three days it was like the pain medication wasn't working at all," King told Campbell on Tuesday.

King said the surgery for Patricia, his wife of 42 years, was for a liver resection. But she didn't get any relief from the pain, he said.

He claims he got a letter six weeks later from the hospital indicating an employee, later identified by the prosecutor's office as 29-year-old Samantha Moyer, may have stolen medicine.

"They stated my wife may have been a victim; they weren't admitting anything," he said.

Kettering Medical Center officials, when asked how long Moyer worked there and what her job status is now, sent WHIO-TV two statements: "We do not talk about personnel matters," and "We are aware of, and have cooperated with, the Board of Pharmacy investigation."

WHIO-TV reached out to Moyer on Tuesday, Campbell said, "but our call was not returned."

WHIO-TV's check of Moyer's registered nursing license on the state board of nursing website shows it is currently "inactive."

King said, "This woman that did this was placed in a position of trust and she violated that trust."

Campbell said a spokesman with the prosecutor's office said they "can confirm is that the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy investigated the matter and brought us the file to review on September 25th" and "the investigation was in connection to her employment at Kettering Medical Center."

King showed Campbell a letter he received from the prosecutor's office. It says his wife is one of five possible victims.

Evidence will be presented to a grand jury for potential theft charges to be approved.

King said he wants to make sure ..."that it doesn't happen to anyone else."

A spokesperson with the prosecutor's office emphasized to Campbell that Moyer is not currently facing any charges and a date has not been set to present the case to a grand jury.
