5 Ohio school shootings that shocked local communities


At least 10 people are dead after a mass shooting at a high school in Texas.

CBS News reports that the shooting suspect has been identified as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, according to law enforcement sources. KHOU confirms the identification. The shooting happened just after 8 a.m. local time at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, about 30 miles outside Houston.

Several shootings at schools in Ohio have impacted communities, resulting in deaths or injuries. Some recent Ohio school shootings include:

1. West Liberty-Salem High School, Jan. 20, 2017

Dozens of medics and police rushed to West Liberty-Salem High School last year for a report of student who opened fire inside the school. Alleged gunman Ely Serna has been accused of bringing a shotgun to school and firing shots. Another student, 17-year-old Logan Cole, was shot twice in the chest and survived.

Champaign County deputies have alleged Serna also shot at a teacher and then randomly shot at classrooms before he was detained by school staff members. Another student was grazed by a shotgun pellet but not injured. READ MORE

2. Linden-McKinley STEM Academy, Oct. 13, 2016

A shooting at Linden-McKinley STEM Academy in Columbus injured two students in October 2016. Two Linden-McKinley students were hit by the gunfire. Marques Lamarr Johnson, 15, was struck in the chest by a bullet and was admitted to Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

His friend, Ja’Quan Marquise-Lamont Curry, 12, was treated for a gunshot wound to the shoulder and released from the hospital the same day as the shootings. Two other teenagers were charged in connection with the shooting. READ MORE

3. Madison Junior/Senior High, Feb. 29, 2016 

James Austin Hancock, 14, was convicted and sentenced to six years in juvenile detention after shooting fellow students at Madison Junior/Senior High in Butler County. Two were hit by gunfire and two by shrapnel. All survived.

One victim, Cooper Caffery, spoke from the witness stand, just a few feet from Hancock.

“I want you to know I forgive you,” the teen said. He added that he had considered Austin a good friend. READ MORE

4. Chardon High School, Feb. 27, 2012

T.J. Lane, 17, killed three students and injured three more at Chardon High School. Prosecutors say he took a .22-caliber pistol and a knife to the school and fired 10 shots at a group of students in the cafeteria. Daniel Parmertor and Demetrius Hewlin, both 16, and Russell King Jr., 17, were killed.

Wearing a white T-shirt with “killer” scrawled across it in large, apparently handwritten letters, Lane was given three lifetime prison sentences without the possibility of parole at a sentencing in March 2013. READ MORE

5. SuccessTech Academy, Oct. 10, 2007 

A suspended student Asa Coon, 14, opened fire at SuccessTech Academy in Cleveland in 2007. Two teachers and two students were hurt before Coon killed himself. Asa, authorities say, walked into SuccessTech Academy with a satchel full of guns and ammunition, according to a report from the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

“In the end, you never know who is going to snap,” classmate Aaron King said while heading home through a cold afternoon drizzle. “You have to watch who you make mad.” READ MORE
