Northridge Elementary School student dies from possible drowning

A student who had recently completed fifth grade at Northridge Elementary School in Springfield, has died from a possible drowning, according to Panama City, Florida, news reports.

Merrick Dillard, who also played football for the Northridge Bearcats, was found on Friday by Panama City Police next to a pool at Landmark Condominiums in Panama City, according to WJHG-TV.

Police attempted life-saving measures on Dillard but he was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, the station reported.

“The NELSD family is heartbroken to share that Northridge student Merrick Dillard passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 7,” a post on Northeastern Local School District’s Facebook page said.

GoFundMe campaign collecting donations for the Dillard's family has been set up by the Northridge Bearcats football team.

“It is with great sadness we share the loss of one of our beloved Bearcats,” the campaign’s description said. “Merrick Dillard #15 passed away after a tragic accident.”

The campaign is asking for $5,000 in donations, “to support the family in this tragic time.”

As of Tuesday morning the fundraiser had already raised $4,126.
