New Carlisle, Urbana apply for HGTV’s ‘Home Town Takeover’

New Carlisle and Urbana are hoping to make the cut of a new HGTV series, “Home Town Takeover.”

Erin and Ben Napier, hosts of the HGTV show “Home Town,” will head to six small towns in the United States for a Main Street makeover.

The six-episode special event will air on HGTV in 2021, according to HGTV’s website.

“Renovating one house at a time is an awesome experience,” Ben said in a statement on HGTV’s website. “But the chance to support an entire town, where we help bring a community back to life - that’s something we’ve always wanted to try.”

To enter for a chance to be on the show, a town must have a population of 40,000 or less and either some older homes that need a face lift or a Main Street that needs a makeover.

New Carlisle’s video submission is a combination of pictures from the New Carlisle Historical Society Facebook page and current photos of New Carlisle.

The video highlights buildings, houses, and historical sites in need of revitalization.

“There has recently been a discussion on how to encourage small businesses and home-bred entrepreneurs,” the New Carlisle video says. “However, the downtown needs a face lift and several buildings need attention to make them functional as small specialty shops or perhaps pop-up shops.”

Urbana’s video submission highlights the city’s current revitalization efforts and the areas that need HGTV’s assistance like the community Farmer’s Market.

Their video is a combination of interviews from local business owners, drone shots of downtown architecture, and the Monument Square District.

“This gradual rejuvenation of business and residential properties is an exciting first step in the process of creating a vibrant downtown district in our beautiful historic small town.” the Urbana video says. “With your help HGTV, we’ll be on our way to enjoying an economically and socially thriving downtown Urbana where people of all ages can live, work, shop, and play.”
