"I've always flown a flag everywhere I lived I never had one that tall and now it's gone," he said.
Schechter said he didn't realize the flag was missing until a friend asked him whether he had taken it down. He looked up. It was gone. It had been flying since August 2016.
The flag is special to the former flight mechanic because the Navy gave it to him on his last day at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, in Washington State, where he served from 1992 to 1996. Until late last week, he had kept the flag with him for 20 years.
"I just want the flag back," he said. "They can keep the pole."
His fiancee filed the theft report with police.
