A safety study completed last year found the six mile stretch of road from Enon to Osborn roads contains six high accident locations, according to county Engineer John Burr.
The study found there were 80 vehicle crashes there from 2007 through 2009. One of those was fatal and 25 more led to injuries.
“A lot of the accidents were runoff accidents because there’s no berm along the edge of the road,” Burr said. “In some cases it goes from the edge of the road to a 5-foot ditch.
The project is slated to start in summer 2013, and includes the widening of four bridges.
In the meantime, the county has tried to curb speeding in the area by adding two electronic signs to let drivers know how fast they’re going, and lowering the speed limit from 55 mph to 45 mph east of Medway.
Commissioners agreed Tuesday that improvements are needed.
“This road is now our No. 1 death trap,” said Commissioner John Detrick.
There are other deadlier intersections in the county, such as South Dayton Lakeview Road near Styer Drive in Park Layne, where there have been several fatal accidents involving pedestrians in recent years.
Burr said a study on possible improvements to that intersection is planned to start in late January.
