On May 16, 1987 people gathered at George Rogers Clark Park near the Hertzler House to kick off the local celebration of the bicentennial of the Northwest Ordinance and the U.S. Constitution.

These two documents set forth the rights of the people and rules for governing.

The celebration included music by the pictured 44th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Band, conducted by Norm Carey, and a presentation of awards to local students for their posters on the theme “200 Years and Still Pioneering,: which were then displayed at the Springfield Museum of Art.
