Freon gas leak forces evacuation of Kissell Center in Springfield

Fire officials confirm a Freon gas leak from the air conditioning system has forced the evacuation of the Kissell Center in Springfield.

A building maintenance worker noticed the leak when he opened up the building Friday morning, according to officials.

The building was evacuated of other employees while firefighters and Hazmat crews investigated and cleared the building out.

Hazmat crews are currently working on ventilating the building. Crews from Columbia Gas and Ohio Edison have responded to cut their respective utility service to the building to prevent an explosion, officials said.

There have been no reports of injuries.

We’re working to learn more about an evacuation and investigation involving Hazmat crews at the Kissell Center building in Springfield Friday morning.

Firefighters were first dispatched to the building on Warder Street around 8 a.m. on reports of a possible Freon gas leak in the building.

The building has been evacuated according to our photographer at the scene. Crews from Columbia Gas and Ohio Edison have also responded.

There have been no immediate reports of injuries.
