Kenton Ridge, Jonathan Alder bands to play special half-time show

Kenton Ridge football fans attending the game against the Jonathan Alder Pioneers are in for a special treat.

The marching bands for both schools will be playing together in a special half-time show Friday night. The game will take place at Kenton Ridge High School and kick-off is set for 7 p.m.

The idea came about because Alder band director Justin Hennig is a former student of Jim Templeton, the band director for Kenton Ridge. Hennig graduated from Kenton Ridge in 2008 and after majoring in music at Ohio State University and becoming a director himself, he modeled his band after Templeton’s.

Since Alder recently joined the same conference as Kenton Ridge, this is the first time the two teams have met. So they decided it might be nice to commemorate the meeting with a special performance.

“All of the kids are really excited about it,” Templeton said.

About 240 total members will be taking the field. Templeton said the two bands will be practicing together for the big show on Friday afternoon and they’ll be ready to play a cover of Kelly’s Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” when half-time starts at around 8 p.m. Although the two of them haven’t done something like this in the past, the opportunity to have it happen again isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

“We’re going to see how things go this year and if it turns out well, it might turn into an annual thing,” Templeton said.
