7 great bourbons you can buy right now if you missed out on special Maker’s Mark release

If you can’t  — or won’t — stand in line for the super-limited release Friday, Aug. 24 of the Ohio-exclusive bourbon from Maker's Mark, we’ve got you covered.

Arrow Wine & Spirits’ “Centerville store” on Lyons Road in  Washington Twp. is the only state-agency liquor store in the southern half of Ohio that will offer the special bottling for sale starting at 9 a.m. Friday. But store officials say their allocation will be small, about half as many bottles as an earlier special bourbon release in June that drew long lines and sold out in 90 minutes.

So if you’re shut out, here is a list of seven bourbons that are NOT super-limited, but which represent a good quality-to-price ratio (and all are cheaper than the special-release bourbon). The folks at Arrow put the list together for us. All prices are for standard-sized “fifths” (750 milliters):

  • Larceny 1870: $29.99
  • Elijah Craig: $29.99
  • Maker’s 46 from Maker’s Mark: $34.99
  • 4 Roses Single Barrel: $37.99
  • Basil Hayden: $39.98
  • Maker’s Mark Cask Strength: $49.99
  • Russell’s Reserve Single-Barrel: $54.99

>>GUIDE: Everything you need to know about Friday’s special Maker’s Mark bourbon release exclusive to Ohio

The bottles of “Maker’s Mark Ohio Private Select,” will be sold starting at 9 a.m. this Friday, Aug. 24, the Arrow store’s regular opening time, a store manager said on Aug. 21. There will be no pre-sales and no holds, and there will be a limit of one bottle per customer. Each bottle will cost $65.36.

The number of bottles available during this release will be even more limited — perhaps by as much as half — than a similar offering in June of an Ohio-exclusive Russell's Reserve Barrel Program product from the Wild Turkey Distillery, which was also sold at Arrow. That Friday morning, more than two dozen people were already in line 45 minutes before the store’s 9 a.m. opening time, and the store’s allocation of the special bottles sold out in 90 minutes.

“It’s going to go fast,” Arrow’s Charlie Marsh said of the Maker’s Mark bottles.
