Springfield police and medic units were dispatched to an accident at Tibbetts Avenue and Selma Road around 10:30 p.m.

Police tell us according to the preliminary investigation, one vehicle went airborne after hitting and knocking out a traffic signal control box.

While in the air, that vehicle skidded across the top of a second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle, in which a child was a passenger, was knocked unconscious.

While still conscious, the second vehicle's driver hit the gas, sending the vehicle across the parking lot of the First Church of the Open Bible, through a fence and into a pole on York Street. The vehicle caught fire there.

Someone rescued the driver and the child from that vehicle, police said. Those two victims have been taken to Miami Valley Hospital and Dayton Children's Hospital by CareFlight.

The driver of the first vehicle has been taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center.

The extent of the injuries is not known.

We will update this report as warranted.
