For traditionalists, Thanksgiving isn’t Thanksgiving without a turkey.
Turkey Day is creeping up on us, and if you don’t have a turkey plan yet, it’s time to get one.
Beyond your neighborhood grocery store, here are some of our favorite places to buy fresh whole birds:
🍗Bowman & Landes Turkeys in New Carlisle
A 4th-generation turkey farm that’s been in operation since 1948, Bowman & Landes offers free-range, veggie-fed turkeys that are antibiotic free. The farm’s taking preorders online at http://bowmanlandes.com/. Located at 6490 E. Ross Road in New Carlisle, they’ll be open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Free range Non-GMO Project Verified whole turkeys are $3.99 per pound, while free-range whole turkeys are $3.49 per pound, the same price as last year. Click here to order online for pickup.
🍗Dorothy Lane Market
If you don’t want to make a trip out to Bowman & Landes Turkeys, you can order them at Dorothy Lane Market. DLM offers free-range, non-GMO whole turkeys for $3.99 per pound; pre-brined turkey at $4.99 per pound; heavenly turkey breasts at $8.99 per pound; non-GMO turkey breasts for $7.99 per pound; and DLM even has hams available. You can order online at dorothylane.com. All DLM locations EXCEPT for Oakwood, close at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, before Thanksgiving. The Oakwood branch closes at midnight. For locations, go here.
🍗Zinks Meats & Fines Wines
Fresh free-range Amish hand-packed turkeys are available at Zink’s Meats & Fine Wines, located at 409 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Washington Twp. The turkeys are $3.49 per pound. Pre-order by calling 937-435-4980.
If you don’t pre-order, you still have a shot at a turkey. Zinks will order extra, but Hoffer warns, “When they’re gone, they’re gone.” The store will be open the Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving from 11 a.m.-8 p.m., and Wednesday before Thanksgiving from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Closed Thanksgiving Day.
Family-owned since 1951, Dot’s Market will have turkeys from Best Choice Frozen Turkeys for $.99 per pound. The prices are valid through Monday, Nov. 25. Visit Dot’s website for all their weekly deals. You can also order fresh Bernards Farm or Bowman Landes turkeys through Dot’s. Call 937-848-6751 for the Bellbrook location or (937) 253-6169 for the Belmont location.
The Whole Foods store on Miamisburg-Centerville Road has a number of options. The most popular is an organic whole turkey for $3.49 per pound, or a regular whole turkey for $2.49 per pound. Pick-up dates for Whole Foods holiday selection are Nov. 21- 28, so you still have plenty of time. Just be sure to place your order at least 48 hours in advance. Other turkey options include: a medium or large oven-ready turkey starting at $49.99 and a Heirloom Bronze Turkey at $2.99 per pound. Place your order at www.wholefoodsmarket.com.
🍗Honey Baked Hams
They may be known for their trademark ham, but Honey Baked Hams also offers Thanksgiving turkeys. You can reserve almost anything you need to make your Thanksgiving dinner complete at myhoneybakedstore.com. You don’t have to call to pre-order, but it might be smart to do so to ensure that you score a turkey in time. Also, it’s best to pick up your turkey breast on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving to avoid the crowds. The store recommends you allow up to 48 hours for your Whole Turkey to thaw in the refrigerator.
The stores will also have a limited number of frozen, fully cooked whole turkeys (smoked and roasted varieties) that can be heated from being either frozen or thawed. The stores aren’t taking pre-orders on the whole turkeys, but selling them first come first served. The full turkeys cost $49.99 and feed about 10 people.
