A gas pump at a Wawa location on the corner of Congress Avenue and Forest Hill Boulevard as of Tuesday, May, 2, 2017. At a time of year when pump prices rise, gasoline is getting cheaper. And that's good news with Memorial Day weekend and start of summer travel season around the corner. (Michael Ares / The Palm Beach Post) *Wawa's competing gas station across the street is 7-Eleven

Gas inventories fall in the Midwest

UPDATE @ 4:03 a.m. 05/18/17

Gasoline inventories in the Midwest were down 1.5 million barrels last week, according to information released on Gasbuddy.com on Thursday.

Low inventories can cause gas prices to increase, while rising inventories can cause prices to fall.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price for a gallon of gas in Dayton Thursday morning is $2.22, with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.13 at United Dairy Farmers located at 3026 Harshman Road and Brandt Pike and Sam’s Club located at

6955 Miller Lane near York Center Drive.

In the Hamilton area, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.25 with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.19 at Speedway located at 3450 Tylersville Road and State Route 4 bypass and Kroger located at 1450 South Erie and Grand boulevards.

In the Springfield area, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.22, with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.19 at several locations.

EARLIER REPORT ON 05/15/17

DAYTON — Average retail gasoline prices in Dayton have risen 15.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.28 per gallon on Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 391 gas outlets in Dayton.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.33 per gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com

Including the change in gas prices in Dayton during the past week, prices on Sunday were 2.3 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 3.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 8.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 10.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

"The national average gas price has again declined in the last week, but the road ahead may be a bit bumpier, said Patrick DeHaan, a GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst. "While the national average fell, several states in the Great Lakes saw average prices rise thanks to a mid-week rally in oil markets that saw oil prices sneak in a net gain for the first week in several, and that may impact prices in the week ahead.”

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price for a gallon of gas in Dayton is $2.28, with prices stable. The cheapest gas, as of Monday morning, is $2.19 at Marathon located at 2250 Wagoner Ford Road and Interstate 75.

In the Hamilton area, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.31 with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.26 at Murphy USA located at 3201 Princeton Road and State Route 4 and Speedway located at 3088 Creekside Drive and Hamilton Middletown Road.

In the Springfield area, the average price for a gallon of gas is $2.28, with prices stable. The cheapest gas is $2.25 at several locations.

“Thank Wednesday's weekly report from the Energy Information Administration for the rally as government data showed a larger than expected decline in oil inventories and gasoline inventories, weighing on markets at the precise time that OPEC chats about extending its crude oil production cuts,” DeHaan said. “Watch both of these factors this week to get a taste for where prices will go to start the summer driving season."
