Food Bank’s dessert auction to aid local families

Desserts can help put food on the tables of needy local families this holiday season.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign and Logan Counties’ Ninth Annual Thanks for Giving Dessert Auction is a way to enjoy sweet treats while raising funds for the Food Bank’s Holiday Giving Campaign.

The bidding will be 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Mother Stewart’s Brewing Company, 109 W. North St.

“It’s a great way for the community to give by getting desserts,” said Tyra Jackson, Second Harvest’s executive director. “It’s our last event of the year, but the kickoff to our holiday fund drive.”

The event began as a friendly competition between bakers at Medical Professional Resources, LLC to give back to the community, which turned to Second Harvest with the auction proposal. It’s grown to also include dessert contributions from a number of local restaurants, bakeries and other businesses.

Jackson said the bidding gets intense and quite generous. Some desserts can go for $200 to $300, and baklava pastries have topped out at $500. The auction can bring $7,000 to $8,000.

“This time of the year is very critical for us. Every dollar we raise provides four to five meals and we can stretch dollars so far,” she said.

The goal is to reach $60,000 in a month-and-a-half. The Food Bank has been down a little while the need grows.

There is still time for community organizations to get barrels for food donations.

The Food Bank reaches 33,000 people a year in the three-county area, many facing food insecurity, which differs from hunger as it stems from a lack of resources for adequate food.

Second Harvest will become a locally operated non-profit in 2019. It works with 65 agencies in the three counties it serves.

This is the third year the auction will be at Mother Stewart’s which is a large setting and can attract around 200 people.

Former Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly will be the event’s auctioneer. Light hors d’oeuvres will be served and Mother Stewart’s products will also be available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m. and the auction will open at 5:30.

It can be a way to pick up holiday treats without having to bake.
