Finding the right hostess gift can be tricky

Demonstrating your gratitude when someone is kind enough to include you at a party is an important gesture that often falls by the wayside. It shouldn’t.

Hostess gifts (as they’re known in some circles, but in no way gender specific) can be tricky, especially if you don’t know your hosts well. And doing it on a dime can present a special challenge.

It’s also important to note that gifts for the party hosts should be a treat for them — a recognition of their efforts, not something that creates a last-minute crisis.

That being said, don’t bring flowers that require a host to stop and find a vase. Never bring food or wine and expect it to be served at the party.

If you don’t know your host well or know she adores a certain type of flower, order an arrangement that can be delivered the day before. You can always send a floral “thank-you” after, too, if you fail to make the pre-party call in time.

If you want to be helpful with your gift, call your host first and ask if there’s something specific you can bring to lessen her stress. If he says yes, then bring what’s been asked of you. If he declines, abide by that request and bring a special gift just for him.

Cocktail napkins with a funny message or coaster sets make great gifts, and can be found in many gift stores and on-line. Youneedadrink.com, an on-line party store, offers hundreds of napkins, most for $4.95 for packages of around 20 napkins, depending on the manufacturer.

If you’re looking for a less-irreverent gift, check out burkedecor.com for all manner of entertaining items. Reasonably-priced, modern-looking serving pieces include a “maps of the world” serving tray ($35), a stainless steel snack bowl from Sagaform ($12.95) and trays, dessert plates and coasters from Thomas Hardy priced between $12 and $28. A Happy Fleece picnic blanket with a water-repellent backing is only $30.

The company also offers interestingly-designed glassware (the cordial glasses are ultra-sleek and only $24 for four), cloth napkins with bold designs and patterns, and candles and bath products from Lucia at low prices.

For affordable, not-to-be-found-anyhwere-else-even-close candles and soaps, stop in at ben and me, 18 Monument Square in Urbana for products from Soap and Paper Factory.

There are so many other thoughtful, creative, budget-friendly gift ideas. Try a book that highlights the host’s interests, hobbies or collections or pies and other baked goods delivered in a bamboo steamer basket tied with satin ribbon.

If all else fails, grab a bottle of wine, wrap it in a beautiful (clean, unused) kitchen towel and tie it up with a bow, but never show up empty-handed.
