Deadly Springfield house fire may have started in garage, chief says

UPDATE @ 1:43 p.m.:

A Springfield fire official said the man killed in a fire on Dover Road in Springfield Thursday died in a front bedroom of the home.

Springfield Fire Rescue Division Chief Brian Miller said the fire probably began in the garage area, however they may never be able to identify an exact cause.

The victim’s identity will have to be determined by either dental or DNA records, he said.

The chief said there is no reason to suspect foul play at this time.

It’s not clear whether there were any working smoke detectors in the house, Miller added.

Springfield Fire Rescue Division Assistant Fire Chief Matt Smith said the fire on Dover Road is deadly. The Clark County Coroner’s Office is on scene.

UPDATE @ 10:34 a.m.:

The Clark County Coroner’s Office is currently at the scene of an earlier house fire on Dover Road in Springfield. We will continue to update this story with any information we receive.

UPDATE @ 4:48 a.m.:

Firefighters confirmed the person who lives in the home is unaccounted for. The identity of the individual has not been released.

When they arrived at the scene, the home was 50 percent involved. With the exception of a few hot spots, the fire is now under control, firefighters said.

Because of a possible hoarding situation, crews initially had difficulty getting the blaze under control, officials said. Furniture and other things were reportedly in front of the windows and doors. Officials noted the fire may have started in the garage.

They have not determined the cause.
