County continues road closures for repair, city waits on Derr Road

Road closures continue throughout Clark County, even as the city of Springfield continues waiting on a plan for the future of Derr Road.

Bryan Heck, Springfield city manager, said the city is currently waiting to hear back from an engineering consulting firm about a plan for Derr Road, a busy street on the north side of Springfield that sees 10,000 to 15,000 motorists a day.

“We are anticipating hearing back sometime in mid-April,” Heck said. “After that, we will hold another public meeting in early May to get some public input.”

In order for the city to receive state help with funding for the street reconstruction, the city had to look for ways to help reduce congestion and promote cleaner travel options, such as bicycles.

The cost to repave Derr Road would eat up most of the city’s $2 million street budget. Heck said previously that the cost of repaving and reconstructing the road would cost the city $1.8 million.

In December, the city presented the public with four options that included options such as reducing the street to one lane both ways to in order to implement bike paths, widening the road, adding a turn lane and creating multipurpose path.

For now, the city is focused on other road improvement projects.
