Cottrel: Some holiday songs play well with January snow

Here we are in the middle of January finally getting our first snow and “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.”

Admit it. You think it looks like Christmas outside too.

A month ago we were singing mournfully about a White Christmas in the 50 degree weather and rain. And “Frosty the Snow Man” didn’t have a chance to make an appearance this year. Now in the middle of January we have a beautiful snow and no way to celebrate it since Christmas is over.

But wait.

There are still some holiday songs that we can sing in January. These winter songs say nothing about Christmas, but a lot about snow, sleigh rides, and fun. We need to create our own mix of winter fun songs to listen to over the next two months.

Finally it is indeed “lovely weather for a sleigh ride together with you.” There is nothing wrong with tapping your fingers to “Sleigh Ride” and waving “Yoo Hoo” as you drive past your neighbors shoveling their sidewalks.

“The weather outside is frightful but the fire is so delightful…” I’m sure that kids everywhere will happily sing the chorus “Let it Snow” as they hope for a snow day or at least a two-hour delay.

There is no mention of Christmas in the lyrics of “Jingle Bells.” (Those reading this should pause here to sing this song to themselves before reading on.) There is no reason that we cannot sing “Jingle Bells” now to our hearts content.

And continuing that “Jingle Bell” theme, we can dance away to “Jingle Bell Rock.” After all “it’s the right time to rock the night away.”

There is also no reason we cannot sing about our favorite “jolly happy soul,” made out of snow. “Frosty the Snowman” is not a Christmas song, but he does at the end say he’ll be back on Christmas Day. “Thumpity Thump Thump.”

January is the perfect time for holding hands with your favorite adult or child, and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.” This can also apply to skiing, dog walking, or sledding.

“It’s a Marshmallow World” sung by Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin always makes me smile. Our most recent snow fall did look like marshmallow covering the world last weekend. Didn’t it?

And of course there is that old favorite but recently maligned song, “Baby, its Cold Outside.” We’ve enjoyed its playfulness for years and I’m not going to stop playing it. I mean, come on, it really is cold outside.

I would also like to thank all the people who were too busy to take down their Christmas lights during that nice warm spell we had just after New Year’s Day. Those lights look so pretty reflecting off “the new fallen snow.” There aren’t many left but they are a blessing in a cold dark night.

Now all we need is a full moon to give “the luster of mid-day” to our snowy landscape at night. Happy January.
