Clark-Shawnee school construction moves forward, ‘in full force’

Construction on the buildings at the Clark-Shawnee Local School District site is continuing even though schools are closed on order from Gov. Mike DeWine as part of the effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

In a video about the school’s construction progress on Clark-Shawnee’s Facebook page, Superintendent Brian Kuhn said work on the elementary, middle and high school is moving forward and is in full force.

The elementary school south gym and the first classroom pod is underway, and a lot of masonry work has been done, Kuhn said.

“Pod A is going up and they are working fast and furious with the masonry there. They’re continuing to pour foundations, they got another one poured last week, so this building is moving forward,” he said. “They’ve got quite a bit of masonry work done, and waiting on some steel beams.”

Kuhn said the middle and high school renovations are in full gear and ahead of schedule since they don’t have to work around anyone or worry about the noise.

“The north gym and business wing are under renovation and they’re also starting some overhead work in the south gym area since we’re not in there right now,” he said.

An open house was originally scheduled for March 12, but it was postponed to a later date not yet determined due to the coronavirus.

“We can’t wait to see what our buildings are going to look like,” Kuhn said. “And we miss you guys because even though the renovation is in full force, the hallways are just not the same.”

A few months ago, a big area of the middle and high school was turned back over, safety features were being updated and the elementary school site was “buttoned up” for the winter except for underground utility work.

Clark-Shawnee held a groundbreaking in October 2018 to kick off construction of their prek through sixth grade school building.

Voters approved a $37 million bond issue in August 2017 to build a new elementary school and renovate the middle/high school. The bond issue was for 5.3 mills for 37 years and will cost the owner of a $100,000 home a little more than $15 a month. The state will cover about about $15 million of the cost of the project.

The school will be across the street from Shawnee High School, which is currently undergoing a major renovation.

Kuhn said the district expects to have the middle/high school renovations completed by the start of the 2020-21 school year with the elementary school completed by March 2021.
