Clark Co. Historical Society hosts historical version of March Madness

March Madness fans are likely analyzing their brackets in anticipation of the start of today’s NCAA basketball tournament, but an opportunity to select favorites in Clark County’s rich history is available as well.

The Clark County Historical Society at the Heritage Center is encouraging people to complete a history bracket during the society’s annual March Madness championship.

Participants will select from 64 items that were recently donated to the historical society’s collections, according to Natalie Fritz, curator of library and archives.

“All these things help tell our history,” Fritz said. “People can look at the different things and vote on (those) that mean the most to them,” Fritz said.

The selection process is open now and will last through April 8, the same day as the NCAA championship game. Brackets are available online through the historical society’s Facebook page or in the lobby of the Heritage Center, located at 117 S. Fountain Ave. in Springfield.

In addition, the Heritage Center has put together a recreation of a 1946 photo of a train crash. But there’s a twist  — the display is made using Peeps marshmallows and other candies.

The display is part of an annual Heritage Center’s event, “Peeps in History,” in which volunteers recreate a unique historical scene from Clark County.

The display will stay open through Easter, Fritz said.
