Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton fractured his right thumb in Sunday’s 33-20 loss to Pittsburgh.

Dalton suffered the injury while tackling Steelers defensive end Stephon Truitt after throwing an interception at the Pittsburgh 7-yard line on the Bengals’ opening drive of the game. Dalton did not return.

Dalton said he will see a specialist Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said Dalton would “be out for a bit” and miss next Sunday’s game at San Francisco. When asked about the length of Dalton’s absence, Lewis said, “I don’t know. I can’t heal bones.”

AJ McCarron took over Dalton in the first meaningful action of his career. McCarron took a few snaps late in the blowout wins against St. Louis and Cleveland.

Tight end Tyler Eifert (concussion) and safety George Iloka (groin) also were injured in the first half and did not return.
