A second-round of tours conducted by Greenon Local School leaders and community members showed different possibilities Greenon can create at their new school building.

Superintendent Brad Silvus said visiting Franklin-Monroe in Arcanum and Monroe in Middletown offered many ideas.

“We saw different heating systems and use of learning spaces,” he said. “The cafeterias and larger spaces also looked a bit different.”

Voters approved by about 500 votes a $36 million bond issue on May 2 to build a new pre-k through 12th-grade school. The 6.98-mill bond will cost a taxpayer who owns a $100,000 property in the district a little more than $20 a month. The state will pick up $18 million of the costs through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission.

The first tours were at Milton-Union Local Schools in West Milton and Ridgemont Local Schools in Mt. Victory. Silvus said he and the board want to collect as much information as possible before ultimately deciding on the design and features the new school will have.

“In our first round, we saw two beautiful school districts and gathered a lot of information about layouts, designs and unique features that each district had in their buildings and how those features support learning and teaching,” he said. “We are, again, interested in having community, parents, staff and students take a look at other school buildings to see what designs are being used, what they like about these facilities and ultimately what we want in our buildings.”

He said the school will continue to do its research.

“We continue to gather information for when we begin thinking of our design possibilities later this fall,” he said.
