Kroger selling products outside U.S. for first time

Kroger is teaming up with Amazon’s biggest competition in China to sell products outside the United States for the first time.

The company announcde it is entering a pilot phase with Alibaba Group’s Tmall Global platform, which will create an online Kroger store for international customers. The test will start with the popular Simple Truth products, servicing more than half a billion Chinese consumers.

“E-commerce enables Kroger to quickly scale to reach new customers and markets where we don’t operate physical stores, starting with China,” said Yael Cosset, Kroger’s chief digital officer.

Alibaba’s Tmall Global platform is China’s largest business-to-consumer marketplace, allowing brands and retailers without operations in China to build virtual storefronts and ship products into China.

“Kroger is the world’s third largest retailer by revenue — $122.7 billion in sales in 2017. We are creating the grocery retail model of the future by focusing on digital and technology,” Cosset said.

Kroger has 44 supermarkets, 12 locations with ClickList services and another 10 locations with Starbucks services. The popular grocer employs more than 8,100 associates in the Dayton region.
