JUST IN: YS Brewery to release 15.3%-alcohol behemoth of a beer

A strong Belgian-style ale that has been resting comfortably for nearly a year at the Yellow Springs Brewery will soon make its debut.

Carpet Nap Belgian Quad” is a collaboration brew of Yellow Springs Brewery and Cincinnati’s Fifty West Brewing Company. It weighs in at a robust 15.3 percent alcohol by volume, and it will be released only at the Yellow Springs Brewery taproom at 305 Walnut St. in Yellow Springs on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m.

The two breweries got together in December 2016 to brew the beer, which has been aging at the Yellow Springs facility. Here’s how YSB’s release described this “celebration of winter:”

“It’s a beer brewed with Belgian yeast, a heavy dose of Belgian candy sugar and authentic Belgian malts giving it strong notes of plum, tobacco, cherries and other estery complexities. Yellow Springs Brewmaster Jeffrey McElfresh stated that aging this high ABV Belgian Quad for more than a year allowed for the flavors to integrate, become more complex and the fruit notes more prominent. We are proud to share this beer with our family and friends as we settle in for the longest of winter nights.”

Since opening, it has added 1,600 square feet and new production equipment to its brewhouse and tasting room to help accommodate retail sales of canned beers and has purchased the former Village Lanes bowling alley at 1475 Xenia Ave. in Yellow Springs for use as a distribution center.
