Higher ed council merges with group to advance AFRL research, defense industry

The Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education is absorbing another local group with the goal of improving research for the local defense industry.

As of July 1, SOCHE has merged with the organization Defense Associated Graduate Student Innovators, also known as DAGSI, according to a press release from the council. The goal of the merger is to develop “the next generation of scientists to advance research priorities of the Air Force Research Laboratory and defense industry in Ohio.”

DAGSI is funded by the Ohio Department of Higher Education and AFRL and is a statewide program that was established in 2004. In its 14 years, the organization has shored up the state’s tech workforce and improved Ohio’s ability to compete in the realms of technology and engineering, according to SOCHE.

“DAGSI is focused on supporting graduate students and faculty that bring novel thinking to current challenges in the area of aerospace and defense,” said Cassie Barlow, SOCHE chief operations officer and . “Since its inception, DAGSI has become a proven success with over 70% of students remaining employed in Ohio after graduation,” Barlow added.
