Edison State to open Eaton location in site Sinclair just closed

Edison State Community College will open a location in Preble County, the school announced today.

The school will partner with the Preble County Youth Foundation to offer classes at a campus that includes the Preble County YMCA, according to an announcement. The plans for the Eaton location comes on the heels of Edison State’s January announcement that it would also expand to Troy.

The college is looking to begin offering courses and training late this fall or this spring. In Eaton, Edison State plans to offer college credit plus coursework, degree and certificate courses in agriculture, agribusiness and ag education and transfer pathways to four-year institutions, according to the school.

“Edison State has a strong history of serving rural communities, and we look forward to developing partnerships in Preble County that will last for years,” said Chad Beanblossom, vice president of regional campuses.

More than 3,000 students are enrolled at Edison State, which first opened its doors in 1973. The community college also has a campus in Greenville in Darke County.

Edison State’s location will open its location on the campus just as Sinclair Community College shuttered its operations there this month.

Sinclair trustees approved the closure of the college’s Preble County Learning Center earlier this year, citing “sustainability concerns” dating back to 2015. Though enrollment at the Preble County location was strong when it opened in 2009, it began to dip in 2013 and never fully recovered, according to Sinclair.

At the end of fiscal year 2017, the Preble County location generated around $42,000 in net revenue for Sinclair and in fiscal year 2018, the learning center had lost around $201,000, according to Sinclair.
