A 22-year-old Springfield man was shot and killed Friday morning, the second fatal shooting in Springfield within a week.
Gary Cameron was found dead at around 12 a.m on Russell Avenue. No one was arrested in the case and police declined to take questions about the investigation Friday.
Officers did detail in a police report what they found when they arrived at the scene.
“Upon our arrival, officers located the victim Mr. Gary Cameron laying in the roadway on Russell Avenue,” the report says. “Mr. Cameron was laying in front of 1063 Russell Avenue on his back …next to a vehicle…”
The report says Cameron was taken to Springfield Regional Medical where he died.
“No charges are being filed at this time due to no suspect information at this time,” the report says.
Springfield police said in a release they hope someone with information will come forward.
“No arrest has been made and the incident remains under investigation,” the release says. “Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 937-324-7685”
At least five 911 calls were released Friday by the City of Springfield. Each caller described the scene, the gunshots and screaming was heard in the back ground.
Several dispatchers told callers they were informed and help was on the way while callers were asking them to hurry.
A woman who lives close to the scene said she was standing outside when she heard eight gunshots.
“ I heard a lady screaming and the Mom was screaming as well, coming around the corner,” Paige Greenwalt said.
She ran in the same direction and saw a man lying in the street, gasping for air. She said there had been trouble in the area in the past.
“There have been robberies over there and someone just got shot and found in the park down there as well,” she said.
Cedric Holt Jr. was found dead in Virgil Mabra Park in May. Cameron’s death and where Holt Jr. was found is less than a half a mile away from each other.
Cameron’s death is the second homicide in Springfield in less than a week.
Howard Edley was shot and killed late Saturday evening in a Clifton Ave. alley between E. Rose Street and Rice Street in Springfield.
Police responded to the alley to find Edley sitting in a running truck with an unidentified number of gun-shot wounds, according to a police report.
No arrests have been made in that case.
