Springfield mom wants justice in son’s murder, rally set for Saturday

It’s been 12 long years that a Springfield mother has waited for justice in the murder of her son.

Cristina Thomas, the mother of Bradley James Adkins, Jr., who was 19 when he was killed in Springfield in 2007, is hosting a downtown Springfield rally Saturday with hopes it will encourage someone with information about her son’s murder to come forward.

“We need help around here solving these homicides,” Thomas said. “We need to get these killers off the street that’s been walking around. I think we need to be heard.”

The rally will take place at the downtown plaza starting at 3 p.m. Thomas said she’s been in contact with other families of loved ones who were killed and they plan to be there too.

Adkins was killed in the early morning hours of Dec. 28, 2007 while at his home on Sherman Avenue, according to the Springfield Police Division.

“Brad was home relaxing after a day spent with family and friends during the holiday season,” the division’s website says. “An apparent home invasion has left his family and friends heartbroken and struggling to understand why this tragedy occurred. Those questions can be answered and this crime solved with the assistance of the community.”

She also hopes the rally will prompt law enforcement to solve her son’s case. She said she’s been patient but after so long it’s time for her family to get closure. She says she believes there are suspects in the case and hopes the community can team together with law enforcement to solve it.

“I’ve waited for many years for people to help me with my son’s investigation,” she said. “We’re not getting any justice.”

Clark County Prosecutor Dan Driscoll said in a Facebook post that police are dedicated to solving Adkins’ murder.

“We remain hopeful we will be able to finish putting together pieces of the puzzle to bring justice for this crime. If you have any information about Mr. Adkins’ death, please contact Springfield Police Division Detective Ronald Jordan at 937-324-7707,” Driscoll said.

Thomas is also the sister-in-law of Jeffery Rife. Rife was shot and killed in March 2017 and his case has also gone unsolved.

Rife was shot in the early morning in the 500 block of South Clairmont Avenue, according to police. He was taken in a private car to the Springfield Regional Medical Center and later died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Thomas said the rally will be in his memory also, and she hopes his killer will be brought to justice too.
