A Springfield man who allegedly led police on a high-speed chase with kids in his car last week was arrested Thursday morning.

Chadwick Carpenter was arrested at a home on the 400 block of Linden Avenue by Springfield police at about 10 a.m. The home was raided by U.S. Marshals about an hour before he was picked up.

Carpenter was wanted on several charges including fleeing police, abduction and obstructing official business. He was charged in Clark County Municipal Court.

Springfield police said in an affidavit that they spotted him on Oct. 25 and knew he had a warrant regarding a child neglect issue. When officers attempted to make an arrest he allegedly fled, the affidavit says.

“Officers activated their overhead lights in attempts to conduct a traffic stop,” the affidavit says. “At this time Mr. Carpenter did not stop the vehicle and accelerated at a high rate of speed continuing westbound.”

Officers said Carpenter ran stop signs and reached about 80 miles per hour during the chase. During the pursuit of Chadwick a woman in the car called county dispatch.

“(The woman) … stated that Chadwick wouldn’t stop the car,” the affidavit says. “(The woman) stated she attempted multiple times to have Mr. Carpenter stop the vehicle. (The woman) was very distraught.”

In a 9-1-1 recording, officers could hear Carpenter saying that he wasn’t going back to jail, according to the affidavit.

The woman was pleading for Carpenter to stop the car and the Clark County Sheriff’s Office was unable to calm her down, but authorities learned there were multiple children in the car, according to the affidavit.

At this time officers terminated the pursuit.
