Springfield man accused of trying to take officer’s gun from holster

A Springfield man is facing charges after he allegedly attempted to take a gun from a police officer’s holster.

Deontay D. Edwards, 32, pleaded not guilty to aggravated robbery in Clark County Municipal Court on Tuesday afternoon. Bond was set at $25,000.

Springfield Police Division officers were called to a nursing home in the 400 block of East McCreight Avenue at about 6:30 a.m. Monday morning on a report of a man who was allegedly being violent toward staff, according to a police report. Staff allegedly had to run away from Edwards because of his behavior, it said.

Edwards was allegedly found smoking in front of the reception desk. The man reached out to shake hands with an officer, but instead grabbed his pistol, the report said. The man allegedly tried to rip it from the holster, but was never able to remove the gun, it said.

Edwards was then taken into custody without incident and placed in the Clark County Jail.
