Increased charges to be sought against Clark Co. stabbing suspect

Raymond Roberts, the 42-year-old Springfield man accused of slicing his wife’s throat, could be facing more serious charges than initially anticipated.

“The state intends to pursue charges of attempted murder and felonious assault for two separate acts during this incident,” said Clark County Assistant Prosecutor Megan Farley during Roberts’ arraignment in the Clark County Municipal Court Monday.

Roberts was originally sought on arrest warrants for domestic violence and felonious assault. He was booked into the Clark County Jail on Saturday on a charge of felonious assault — serious harm to the victim.

Farley asked Judge Denise Moody to consider the three-day manhunt prior to Roberts’ arrest when deciding his bond, calling him a “flight risk.”

A not guilty plea was entered for Roberts by his attorney, Jon Paul Rion, who claimed Roberts was on his way to turn himself into the Clark County Sheriff’s Office when he was taken into custody Saturday morning. He said Roberts called him before his arrest.

“You have a man with a very limited record whatsoever and a good job — he’s an electrician — who appears to have many contacts to the community,” Rion said.

Roberts’ bond was set at $250,000 on Monday. If he posts bail, Judge Moody ordered him to have no contact — in the form of texts, emails or face-to-face communication — with his wife.

Roberts’ silver Ford Focus was spotted by an Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper on Saturday in the area of Ohio 68, not far from his Quwood Road home. After a short chase with law enforcement, he was eventually apprehended near Possum Road and Ohio 72 without incident and taken to the Clark County Jail.

Roberts fled Clark County after the stabbing, but then returned, said Sheriff’s Maj. Chris Clark.

The victim, who deputies said was stabbed in the neck on Sept. 20, was able to get into a car and drive from their home. She then drove to Mayberry’s Mini Mart in the 4000 block of Springfield-Xenia Road, where Roberts then allegedly rammed her car before fleeing the scene, according to deputies.
