Springfield police are investigating a burglary at a home belonging to an 87-year-old woman who recently died.

Police responded to the burglary call on Sunday at around 10:30 p.m. to a home on the 800 block of Gabe Street because the front door of the home was open when no one was supposed to be inside, a police report says.

“(The neighbor) went on to state that the family had been cleaning the house out over the last several days but had left earlier in the day,” the report says.

Officers found the front door open, the report says, with the window from the door lying outside. There were also door frame pieces scattered outside and in a trash can, the report says.

Officers searched the house, the report says, and found a mattress on its side and leaned up against a wall.

“Officers were unable to determine if anything was taken and unable to contact any immediate relatives,” the report says.
