Glitch leads to a Springfield sex offender living too close to a daycare

A registered sex offender is living too close to a Springfield daycare, but officials didn’t catch the violation because of incorrect data in their system.

The man, Joseph Crager, is a Tier 3 sexual offender. He lives less than 1,000 feet from the Kids World of Springfield preschool, which is located at 2000 E. High St.

The daycare moved about a year ago, but its requested address change was not fully processed in a state database available to sheriff’s offices checking for proximity of registered sex offenders. When Crager registered his new address within the last six months, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office did not flag it as too close to a school because of the glitch at the state level.

Kelly Stewart, who owns the daycare, said she first learned of the situation when a local parent showed her documentation about Crager.

“To know that potentially there’s someone that close and not know it is very scary,” she said.

The sheriff’s office said Crager will need to find a new place to live.

This news outlet contacted the law firm that represented Crager in his 2010 case in Madison County, and it declined comment.
