Nadine Moon, from Fort Bend County, said her 13-year-old daughter was targeted after the girl commented on Luke Bryan’s official Instagram page, the television station reported.
Moon said she was stunned when her daughter asked if messages she was receiving from another Instagram account, which was a fan page for Bryan, were legitimate.
"They offered to fly her to a concert and she was asking where and then they said they had to have her name and address in order to send her the tickets and she got really wary," Moon told KHOU. "My initial reaction was I thought, 'Oh my God. This is a sex trafficker trying to fly her to Mexico.'"
Moon's daughter checked online to see if Bryan was performing in Mexico, and he was. Moon, who tracks her daughter's online activities, said she was glad her daughter raised a red flag with her.
"My biggest fear is that she would have fallen for it," Moon told KHOU. "And, even though we talk to her monthly about it you could see that she was hesitant to cut off the communication."
Dan Parsons, of the Better Business Bureau of Greater Houston and South Texas, said his agency has seen this kind of scam before, but urges parents and teens to investigate before agreeing to give out personal information, KHOU reported.
“A famous person like that, if they’re going to do it they’ll do it the proper way,” Parsons told the television station. “They’ll go through a number of marketing campaigns. You’ll know it’s the real people.”
The account that tried to lure Moon's daughter is still online but has been flagged, KHOU reported.
